New owner, new era for Silent Sports

Tuesday, October 7th, 2008

How ironic that I would crow about Silent Sport’s humble beginnings and independence as I did in the post below. For it is now official that the magazine, and all of Waupaca Publishing’s previous holdings, are now (as of yesterday) owned by Journal Community Publishing Group, a subsidiary of Journal Communications whose flagship newspaper is the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

We’ll remain in Waupaca, just move down the street into JCPG’s much larger headquarters, sometime in the coming weeks. Yours truly is still editor and Jim Wendt is still the advertising manager. Our stable of knowledgeable columnists are coming with us too. Jim and I are cautiously optimistic that the mag will flourish under its new owners who recognize the potential of such a unique publication that promotes active and healthful living in our backyards.

For the entire 25 years and three months of its existence, Silent Sports has been the product of the dedication and enthusiasm of its staff, contributors and readers – runners, cyclists, skiers and paddlers – and of its owner, a 60-year-old, second-generation, family business. While the ownership has changed, the source of our determination to sustain the magazine is undiminished.

We hope you’ll stand toe to toe with us at this new starting line. We don’t know what will face us beyond the immediate horizon, but we’re ready for the challenges, look forward to the scenery and hope to inspire yet more people to follow the course.

We thank you for your continued support.
